In 1865, C. H. Spurgeon’s printed weekly sermons were selling 25,000 copies a week, and translated into 20 languages. In America sometimes his sermons were printed in the newspapers. That year, Passmore & Alabaster began printing a monthly magazine edited by the Baptist preacher entitled The Sword & the Trowel: a record of combat with sin and of labour for the Lord. Spurgeon began the first issue with these words: “We would ply the Trowel with untiring hand for the building up of Jerusalem’s dilapidated walls, and wield the Sword with vigour and valour against the enemies of the Truth.”
